Vitamin D is one of the essential minerals and vitamins that keep our bodies functioning, but it isn’t always easy to get all we need from the sun during the darkest months of the year. That’s where Pro D3 comes in.
From only £9.99 per month
So why is Pro D3, and other vitamin D products, called the sunshine pill? Well, we get most of our vitamin D from the sun, or at least we should. In Britain, and other areas further away from the equator, this isn’t always easy during the winter months. This is particularly a problem for people with darker skin, which does not process vitamin D from the sun as efficiently as those with lighter skin.
Supplements are the perfect solution, and Pro D3 offers various strengths to provide protection against severe deficiencies that can lead to serious conditions like osteoporosis. Prescription strengths are available, and our UK registered clinicians can provide these after you have filled in a simple online questionnaire.
Subscription packages from EveAdam mean you need never worry about running out of “sunshine” again, with monthly deliveries available. For those that want to buy in bulk, you can also get it delivered every one, two, three, six or nine months.
Pro D3 is a form of vitamin D that the body finds easiest to process. It’s well tolerated and highly effective at preventing severe deficiencies from occurring. It’s available in capsule or liquid form and has a wide range of strengths to suit each need.
Yes, you can, but that does mean remembering to buy it when needed. Most people find the maintenance dosages are easier to maintain when you have it delivered, but they’re available to buy over the counter at your local pharmacy.
For some vitamin D products, you will need a prescription. That’s not because clinicians don’t trust you, but because high levels of vitamin D can cause serious health problems, they aren’t always suitable for everyone. These dosages are only prescribed when you have a severe vitamin D deficiency, treating related conditions, such as osteoporosis.
Thankfully, in the case of Pro D3, none need a prescription.
As mentioned above, Pro D3 helps prevent osteoporosis. So what is osteoporosis and what causes it?
Put simply, severely low levels of calcium, partly caused by low levels of vitamin D (alongside low calcium intake, weight, age and some health conditions). This can result in bone deformities and weak or brittle bones. Obviously it’s better to avoid this from occurring in the first place, so be sure to keep your vitamin D levels up when the nights close in over winter.
Pro D3 is one of a number of vitamin D supplements and treatments that can be used to treat and prevent severe deficiencies from occurring. It comes in capsule and liquid forms, as well as different strengths, depending on why it’s being taken.
Pro D3 is prescribed to treat severely low levels of vitamin D. There are many health risks associated with low vitamin D, but the most common relate to bone disorders.[1] Osteoporosis is one of these, which results in the weakening of the bones, causing deformities and breakages. While a relatively short course of high strength vitamin D can help enormously, you’ll likely then need to take the maintenance dose for the rest of your life.
As well as preventing severe levels of vitamin D deficiencies that are described above, Pro D3 also prevents conditions and symptoms associated in less severe cases. Smaller doses of vitamin D that are available without prescription can help prevent fatigue, low mood, general aches and pains and immunity issues that are associated with low vitamin D.[2]
A maintenance dosage might be needed to slightly increase your levels of vitamin D, in which case a product like Pro D3 1000 IU would be suitable. There are lower daily doses available as well, depending on your needs.
The higher strength doses that are prescribed to treat severe deficiencies will need to take into account just how severe your vitamin D levels are. One of the most commonly prescribed products is Pro D3 20,000 IU, but there are stronger and weaker doses that can be prescribed to suit your specific level of deficiency.
IU stands for international unit, and is often used to describe the strength of a vitamin. So why do vitamins not just use the weight of the active ingredient, such as mgs or mcgs that are highlighted for other medical products?
IU does not measure the exact weight of the supplement or treatment. Instead it describes how potent the dose in question is. For products like vitamins, this is a more accurate way of measuring its potency.
You can buy pro D3 online from EveAdam and have your first purchase delivered the next working day. If you need a prescription strength treatment, simply fill in our online questionnaire and one of our UK registered clinicians can offer a range of products to suit your needs. All packaging is discreet and you can have your repeat prescription delivered as and when you need it.
Pro D3, in either capsule or liquid form, is best taken with a meal as this helps the body get the most out of the treatment. For Pro D3 liquid, shake the bottle before use. You can add it to water or food. Pro D3 capsules should be swallowed whole with water.
Maintenance doses, which includes Pro D3 400, 800, 1,000, 2,500 IU capsules and 2,000 IU liquids, are taken daily, unless specifically stated by your doctor or pharmacist.
For treatment doses, always follow your prescribing clinician’s instructions. Typically, the 20,000 IU capsules are taken twice a week for seven weeks. The 30,000 IU capsules are taken once a week for ten weeks in total. Treatment doses are usually followed by an ongoing maintenance dose that is taken daily.
The most common side effects for Pro D3 should not be confused with the product having common side effects. In fact, the most common are listed as “uncommon”, affecting less than one in 100 patients.
These include hypercalciuria and hypercalcaemia, which are high levels of calcium in the urine and blood.
Hypercalcaemia, in particular, can be dangerous and will need medical attention if you notice any of its symptoms. These include: digestive problems, severe fatigue, palpitations, disorientation, excessive thirst and needing to urinate frequently.
While vitamin D supplements are not known to cause allergic reactions in the vast majority of people who take them, it’s important to know what to look for in case they do present. Severe allergic reactions will require immediate medical attention, so look out for the following symptoms: swelling of the face, lips, throat or lips, hives, severe itching and rashes.
If you have dietary restrictions you should tell your doctor or pharmacist before buying Pro D3 or any other supplement or treatment. Products vary greatly by what they contain, so you might find some capsules are not vegan or halal or kosher, while other products might contain gluten or dairy.
If in doubt, you can always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medication and lists all of its ingredients.
Pro D3 capsules are kosher, halal, vegetarian and gluten and dairy free. Pro D3 vegan capsules are also available in the strength of 800 IU.
Our main source of vitamin D is from the sun, so whenever possible you should expose your skin to sunlight without risking damage. In terms of how long for, it depends on the time of year, the strength of the sun and the pigmentation of your skin. You should always ensure that your skin does not burn from exposure to the sun as this greatly increases the risk of skin cancer.
Both are beneficial to us, but vitamin D3 is processed more efficiently than vitamin D2 and is therefore the more commonly used form in supplements and treatments. Pro D3, as the name suggests, uses D3, which is also called colecalciferol. Colecalciferol is also easier to store than its vitamin D2 counterpart (ergocalciferol).
Vitamin D2 and D3 are also separated by the food groups they’re found in. Vitamin D2 is found in vegetable sources, such as mushrooms, while D3 is found in animal products, such as some dairy and fish. Vitamin D3 is also added to certain foods, such as cereals.
Before taking Pro D3, you should always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your treatment.
Very few people will have problems taking Pro D3. It’s easily tolerated and, as long as you do not exceed the stated daily dose or instructions on your prescription, it’s very safe. There are some safety issues that you should be aware of, which are important to know before you start treatment.
There are some conditions that make taking vitamin D unsuitable. You should not take Pro D3 if you have any of the following: hypercalciuria (high levels of calcium in the urine), hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood), sarcoidosis, kidney stones or disease and allergies to any of its ingredients.
All medications have the potential to interact with another, so your doctor or pharmacist will need to know about any other treatments you’re taking. You should not mix Pro D3 with any of the following: some epilepsy or hypertension treatments, laxatives that contain paraffin oil, cardiac glycosides and glucocorticosteroids.
